Application advice

Research the firm

Before applying for a Trainee Programme, research potential firms. Every application you make should be tailored to that firm, giving you the best chance of success. What are you looking for in a firm? What is important to you as an applicant? Legal specialisms, work/life balance, culture, technology?

If a firm has a distinct culture, values, or social commitment that aligns with your own, try to add this to your answers.

Take your time, quality is better than quantity

Take your time. Your application should reflect that you can work at a high standard. The ability to write well and proofread is key. Ask a friend, family or careers advisor to read through your application, just to ensure there are no small mistakes or typos before you submit.

Highlight your experience

Although you might not have any previous legal experience, think about any previous work experience or a hobby that might have transferrable skills. What did you learn that would help you as a Trainee Solicitor?

Tip: Reading the news and thinking about how it will impact the law, is a great way to keep up to date with the legal industry.

Be yourself and be honest

Lastly, when completing your application, be yourself and be honest. If you are successful and make it through to the interview, it's likely you'll be asked about your application. Showcase your drive and passion for the law and why you want to be a solicitor. Draw the reader's attention and highlight your unique attributes. Show them how you stand out in a competitive market.
